style="font-size:14.666666666666666px;font-family:Verdana;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;">In
this lecture, I will give an overview on recent research
activities in the field of hydro-gravimetry. Variations of water
storage on or below the Earth surface are related to mass
variations, which in turn cause variations of the Earth’s
gravity field. By monitoring the time-variable gravity field of
the Earth, the satellite missions GRACE (since 2002) and its
successor GRACE-FollowOn (to be launched in 2017), provide
unique integrative information on the hydrological cycle at the
global scale, and for large river basins and aquifers.
Similarly, high-precision measurements with gravimeters on the
ground, in particular with superconducting gravimeters, allow
for monitoring water storage changes at the local scale of
several 100 meters around the instrument. I will illustrate the
measurement principles of time-lapse gravimetry from ground and
space, and present examples of hydrological applications for
assessing the water balance, long-term changes in the
hydrological cycle, or the impact of hydrological extreme
events.

stars that reach the end of their lives with their hydrogen
envelopes intact explode as type II supernovae (SNe II). SNe II
are the most populous terminal stellar explosion in the
Universe. The short lives of SNe II make them a direct tracer of
massive star formation within galaxies, and their energetics
affect their environments and hence galaxy evolution and
dynamics. The intrinsic brightness of SNe II also make them
useful probes of other processes in the Universe. SN II
progenitors have been constrained to be red supergiant stars
through their direct detection on pre-explosion images. However,
it is currently unclear how the large diversity observed in
their light-curves and spectra is linked to progenitor
properties such as mass, metallicity, extent of the hydrogen
envelope, or the role of binary interaction.

this seminar I will discuss the our current knowledge of these
explosions, focusing on studies of large samples of SNe,
attempting to constrain the diversity of a range of observed
transient parameters, and mapping these to progenitor and
explosion properties. I will also discuss the use of SNe II as
Astrophysical probes, concentrating on their application to
measuring extra-galactic metallicities. I will finish with a
