SUPERNOVA 2012bs
     A. J. Drake, S. G. Djorgovski, M. J. Graham, and R. Williams, California
Institute of Technology; J. L. Prieto, Princeton University; M. Catelan,
Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile; E. C. Beshore and S. M. Larson,
Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona; and E. Christensen,
Gemini Observatory, report the discovery of an apparent supernova in unfiltered
Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) images:

Further CSS magnitudes for 2012bs:  Mar. 1.45 UT, [20.2; Mar. 17.43, 20.1.

     L. Tomasella, S. Benetti, E. Cappellaro, A. Pastorello, P. Ochner, M.
Turatto, and S. Valenti, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Istituto
Nazionale di Astrofisica, report that a spectrum (range 360-810 nm; resolution
2.3 nm) of 2012bs was obtained on Apr. 1.12 UT with the Ekar-Copernico 1.82-m
telescope (+ AFOSC).  The spectrum shows that 2012bs is a type-Ia supernova.
Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra via the "Supernova
Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows a
best fit with several standard type-Ia supernovae near maximum and a redshift
of z = 0.066.  The expansion velocity derived from the deep Si II absorption
is about 11500 km/s.
