SUPERNOVA 2013bk IN IC 553 = PSN J09404755-0526119
     S. Howerton, Arkansas City, KS, U.S.A.; A. J. Drake, S. G. Djorgovski,
A. Mahabal, M. J. Graham, and R. Williams, California Institute of Technology;
J. L. Prieto, Princeton University; M. Catelan, Pontificia Universidad
Catolica de Chile; R. H. McNaught, Australian National University; and E.
Christensen and S. M. Larson, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of
Arizona, report the Catalina Real-time Transient Survey discovery of an
apparent supernova in public images from the Siding Spring Survey.

SN 2013 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset
 2013bk Apr. 7.38 9 40 47.55 - 5 26 11.9 18.3 36".2 E, 4".6 S

The variable was designated PSN J09404755-0526119 when it was posted at the
Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2013bk based on the
spectroscopic confirmation reported below. An image taken by J. Brimacombe
(Cairns, Australia) with a luminance filter on Apr. 8.282 UT shows 2013bk at
mag 18.5 with position end figures 47s.58, 10".9; his image is posted at
website URL http://www.flickr.com/photos/43846774@N02/8633406366/.

     M. Childress, R. Scalzo, B. Tucker, F. Yuan, and B. Schmidt, Australian
National University (ANU), report spectroscopic classification of PSN
J09404755-0526119 = SN 2013bk as a type-Ic supernova near maximum light.
They obtained a 20-min spectrum of 2013bk on Apr. 12.47 UT with the Wide
Field Spectrograph (WiFeS; Dopita et al. 2007, Ap. Space Sci. 310, 255) on
the ANU 2.3-m telescope at the Siding Spring Observatory using the
B3000/R3000 gratings (wavelength range 350-980 nm at 0.1-nm resolution).
The spectrum of 2013bk was compared to supernova spectral templates using
SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024), and the two best matches
were to spectra of SN 1994I at +3 days and to SN 1991N at maximum light.
The redshift fitted from 2013bk was z = 0.020 +/- 0.005, consistent with
the redshift of the apparent host galaxy, IC 553 (z = 0.022; Huchra et al.
2012, Ap.J. Suppl. 199, 26).
